Philanthropic Women Fund New Cardiac & Emergency Equipment
The Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s convened recently for their annual project selection meeting. Members heard presentations from St. Joseph’s Hospitals’ physicians on some of the most pressing medical needs of our community. Together, the entire group of women voted on which project would be funded with their $205,000 grant.
The package selected, presented by pediatric cardiologist Dr. Daniel McKenna, will provide 2 cardiac and emergency ultrasounds units. The Heart Institute’s Cardiovascular Hybrid Operating Suite will utilize the Epiq Cardiac Ultrasound for assessing, diagnosing, and treating adult and pediatric patients, including newborn babies, with congenital heart conditions. The second ultrasound, to be utilized at St. Joseph’s Hospital-North’s Emergency Department, will assist nurses with placing peripheral IVs in patients with compromised veins. In addition to a higher success rate for placement of IVs on the first attempt, the ultrasound allows the user to see deeper and larger veins within the arms resulting in fewer complications.
