A Heartfelt Recovery: David Stanbra’s Journey to Health at St. Joseph’s Hospital
February is Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and the importance of seeking quality care.
For 69-year-old David Stanbra, a structural engineer from Lee County, Florida, heart health became an urgent priority when he was diagnosed with severe blockages requiring surgical intervention. What began as a routine medical evaluation quickly turned into a life-changing journey—one that led him to St. Joseph’s Hospital and the expert care of Phillips B. Harrington, MD.
When David consulted his local cardiologist in Fort Myers, Florida, the initial plan was to place stents. However, once his doctor began the procedure and assessed the severity of the blockage, it became clear that a triple bypass surgery would be necessary. Facing a long wait time for surgery in Fort Myers, David sought advice from his son-in-law, a nurse with experience at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Acting swiftly, his son-in-law compiled David’s medical records and had them reviewed by Dr. Harrington at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
With St. Joseph’s Hospital offering a much shorter wait time—nearly two months ahead of schedule compared to local options—David made the trip to Tampa, first to meet Dr. Harrington, and then one week later, for his surgery.
“I was thrilled to have the procedure scheduled on such short notice, but having a family member personally recommend a surgeon known for delivering excellent patient outcomes—that was truly a blessing,” David said.
His first meeting with Dr. Harrington solidified his decision. “As a structural engineer, I appreciate efficiency and precision,” he said. “Dr. Harrington was all business, and that’s exactly what I wanted. I was sold.”
Exceptional Care, A Speedy Recovery
On the day of the procedure, David placed his trust in the hands of Dr. Harrington and the expert medical team at St. Joseph’s Hospital, who performed his life-saving triple bypass surgery.
“My experience was excellent,” David said. “The care I received was top-notch.”
Now back home in Lee County, David continues to focus on his recovery with regular check-ups, and says he is doing “excellent.” Just six weeks post-surgery, he felt strong enough to lace up his skates again—an incredible milestone for an avid hockey player. By the eighth week, he was back in full force, playing a game that even went into overtime.
“After the game, I was in a daze—not because I was exhausted, but because I wasn’t out of breath at all. That’s when I realized how incredible my recovery had been.”
David admits he rarely shares reviews or experiences, but his remarkable recovery compelled him to make an exception. His story is a testament to the power of expert medical care, timely intervention, and the dedication of St. Joseph’s Hospital’s cardiac team.
“Good work, Dr. Harrington,” he said.
